In Scandinavia, the incidences of major trauma range from 30 to 52 per 100.000 inhabitants annually. Hypothermia is vastly common for multiple injured patients, and reports to be present in over 40% of all trauma patients.
Hypothermia is an independent risk factor for mortality. If not prevented it leads to to failure of critical organs and ultimately, death.
Hypothermia can also occur in any weather condition. It may be caused by adverse temperatures, shock, trauma, thyroid conditions, or diabetes.
It is generally recognized that ~20% of our body heat is lost by the neck and head. Hypothermia occurs already at 2 degrees loss in overall body temperature.
